Recognitions

GCS Employee of the Month for October 2008
The board recognized Dana Carpenter, a teacher at Alamance Elementary, as the Guilford County Schools (GCS) October Employee of the Month. 

GCS Volunteer of the Month for October 2008
The board recognized Heather Jones, a volunteer at Reedy Fork Elementary, as the GCS October Volunteer of the Month. 

Ferndale Middle’s Future Business Leaders of America
The board recognized Ferndale Middle’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter for winning first place in the state for middle level computer slideshow competition.

2008 GCS Principal of the Year and Finalists
The board recognized Dr. LaToy Kennedy, principal at Wiley Elementary, as the district’s Principal of the Year. The board also recognized Ken Wheat from Pruette SCALE School as the district’s secondary schools winner, as well as finalists Dr. Brian Clarida from Sumner Elementary, Dr. Benita Lawrence from Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary and Rodney Wilds from Jackson Middle.

Staff Reports

Contractual Agreement with A&M Construction Services, Inc. – Pleasant Garden Elementary Cafeteria Renovation

The board approved to allow Atlantic Contracting Company, Inc. to withdraw their bid due to mathematical error and award a contract to A&M Construction Services, Inc. in the amount of $535,604 for the renovation of Pleasant Garden Elementary cafeteria and dining room, as presented by Leo Bobadilla, chief operations officer.

Sports Drinks Bid for 2008-09
The board approved to reject bids submitted on May 14, 2008, May 21, 2008 and May 28, 2008 for juice and sports drinks and award a contract to Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the amount of $219,800, for sports drinks for the 2008-09 school year, as presented by John Mann, purchasing officer.

Board Discussion

Legislative Committee Update
Chairman Duncan called on board member Dot Kearns, convenor of the legislative committee, who presented to the board an update from the legislative committee.

Governance Review Committee Update

  1. First Reading – Policy GACA, Superintendent Teacher Advisory Council
    The board approved for first reading Policy GACA, Superintendent Teacher Advisory Council.
  2. First Reading – Policy DD, Grants Funding
    The board approved for first reading Policy DD, Grants Funding.

Closed Session
The board addressed items in closed session.

Contractual Agreement with New Atlantic Contracting for Phase I – Jamestown Middle
The board approved to award a contract to New Atlantic Contracting, Inc. for construction management at risk services at Jamestown Middle in the amount of $2,780,798, contingent upon staff being able to review specifications, possible cost savings and commitment of credibility.

Architect Selection Committee Update
The board voted to move forward with Alamance Elementary, Southeast area elementary and Grimsley High as single prime projects, and Summerfield Elementary as a construction management at risk project.

The board voted to authorize staff to negotiate on eight projects, as presented by staff.

Salary Increase for Cabinet/Senior Staff Employees
The board approved a 2.75 percent salary increase for cabinet and senior staff employees.

 

Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
