Communities in Schools

Communities In Schools (CIS) is a private, non profit agency that connects the public, private and volunteer sectors of the community to public schools on behalf of students and families. Staff counselors, human services providers, business people, college students and volunteers serve alongside teachers in an effort to help children successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. The services provided by CIS help ensure students of the following:

  • A healthy start with the potential for a healthy future;
  • A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult;
  • A safe place to learn and grow;
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation; and
  • A chance to give back to peers and community.

Lack of shelter, good nutrition, eyeglasses and a multitude of personal, family, social and academic problems cause students to be low performing in school. While the needs of many children are very basic, the help they need remains just out of reach, tangled in a maze of agencies scattered throughout the community. Communities In Schools helps students get needed services that are often difficult to access.

Guilford County Schools enjoys a close and productive working relationship with Communities In Schools organizations in both High Point and Greensboro. Persons wishing to volunteer their time through CIS may call (336)883-6434 in High Point or (336)691-1264.
