Guilford County Schools has just released Roadmap 2 Reading, a new 3-year reading initiative to replace One, Two and Three Million Books. In support of that theme, we want all students to try and explore the USA by reading a book set in each of the 50 US States during the next school year.
These can be fiction novels set in any of the 50 States or students may substitute Washington D.C. for a state, students may also choose nonfiction titles about the state, landmarks in the state, sports teams or even biographies of famous people from that state. Therefore, consistent with our commitment to prepare all students for success, we want to challenge our students to read 50 books during the 2013-2014 school year. Over the summer students are asked to read the first 10 books of their choice as long as they are on an appropriate reading level.
Students can use their ZPD range from their last STAR test if they were a student at Ferndale during the 2012-2013 school year. If they are new to FMS, the Lexile level can be used. Students with higher Lexile scores should read between 730 and 1200 as fiction books higher than that are difficult to find. Levels can be found in the student test score reports.
It is important to read books that are the right fit, too easy or too hard and there are no real gains made in reading.
