Welborn Academy of Science and Technology distributed Dell Netbooks to about 160 students on Wednesday. The computers provide the necessary tools for the school’s magnet students to learn in an almost paperless classroom.
Welborn students will use the netbooks throughout the school year in much the same way they traditionally use textbooks. They will receive their assignments from their teacher and submit projects electronically. The netbooks, which are small laptop computers, are equipped with wireless cards and Microsoft Office software. Students will be able to use them in class and take them home to use as needed for school-based assignments.
Welborn’s science and technology magnet program started during the 2008-09 school year. It provides specialized learning in geology, physics, forensic science, biotechnology, spreadsheet, Web design and digital photography. Welborn students also benefit from the integration of science, technology and mathematics throughout the curriculum.
Recently, the school also opened an Internet café in the cafeteria. Students can use the café’s eight laptop computers during lunch.
“The cafe is another step to immerse our students in technology,” said Brian Lehman, magnet coordinator at Welborn. “Many of our students do not have Internet access at home and this is a means to get them online and ready themselves for the technology demands of the 21st century.”
